The Taming of the Shrew is RoleCall's ninth production for their Shakespeare in the Ponce series. This winter show will be performed in the intimate indoor space at RoleCall Theater inside Ponce City Market. Staged in thrust with a small company of six actors, you won't want to miss this silly and satirical presentation of one of Shakespeare's most examined works. Directed and produced by RoleCall's in-house Shakespeare team, Evan Fields and Lyssa Hoganson, performances will take place Thursdays through Sundays at 7:00 pm from Dec. 2nd through Dec. 19.
Summary: The Taming of the Shrew begins with a mischievous nobleman tricking a drunken tinker named Christopher Sly into believing he is actually a nobleman himself. The main plot then begins, as the nobleman then has the play performed for Sly's diversion. Lucentio and his servant Tranio are newly arrived in Padua when Lucentio quickly falls in love with Bianca Minola, daughter of Baptista Minola. Baptista will only allow Bianca to marry after her sister Katharina, the titular shrew, has found a husband. Petruchio is an old friend of Lucentio's rival suitor, Hortensio, and takes little convincing to court the shrew himself after hearing the size of her dowry. Petruchio sets out to "tame" his unwilling bride while Lucentio and Hortensio vie for Bianca's love, eventually leading to one of Shakespeare's most controversial endings.
